Shuttle Atlantis STS-132 - Amazing Shuttle Launch Experience

Kennedy Space Center, May 14th, 2010.
I was privileged to travel to the Kennedy Space Center, to watch the launch of Atlantis, on what was then, the final "scheduled" flight of the orbiter (STS-132). This video is my homage to the shuttle program, through the in-depth experience of a single orbiter launch. I believe we should be thankful for the Atlantis orbiter, all her astronauts, the countless NASA staff who made her fly, and the American people who created a space vehicle of extraordinary power and grace.
This footage incorporates numerous camera views from the ground, the footage I took during launch, and video and audio from NASA showing the orbiter stack itself, during takeoff and flight -- in order to experience the preparation and the resulting eight and a half minute exhilarating ride into space.
In places, the timeline of the actual events has been extended slightly to allow us to see different viewpoints of the same moment, and better experience the amazing feat of launching a spacecraft into orbit.
    Enjoy the ride!
After this flight, Atlantis was processed and prepared to fly one last time... this time as "on-call" STS-335, which would remain flight-ready, should either of the remaining two orbiters flights require a rescue mission.
A rescue flight was not needed and Congress, in a rare moment of clarity, appropriated enough money to extend the program to allow the already "flight ready" Atlantis to launch one last time and to become the last shuttle mission of the Shuttle Program, as STS-135.
Atlantis now has a home at the Kennedy Space Center.
Errata: an editing error at the end of the video states the launch was 2012, rather than the correct year of 2010.

        @Jonathan Mickelson oh

      2. Jonathan Mickelson

Except they did! They knew that this was intended to be the last flight of Atlantis, and they knew the other two orbiters would fly one last time as well. Atlantis got lucky and was able to fly one last time after this, becoming the actual last Shuttle flight on STS-135.

Space Shuttle programm was the best technological space achivement and must be got back to life to avoid humiliationg flights on the Soyuz jalopies of Roscosmos.

I drove from New Mexico to watch this "last launch". Leaving the hotel in Tampa, I underestimated the amount of traffic on the way to a good viewing spot. Came a few miles short & pulled over with everyone else to watch. My first witness of any launch & man was it cool to see. I only wish I got close enough to feel the rumble. Thanks for this video!

I remember watching that shuttle launch standing on the roof of my house. I also remember watching the Challenger as a young kid with my dad at cape Canaveral air Force base.

Why give the orbit parameters in statute miles instead of nautical miles?

      1. Jonathan Mickelson

Good question, I've heard some use of nautical miles during launches. I wonder if there's a specific part of launch where one is used over the other?

What happened on STS-136 after STS-135

      1. Jonathan Mickelson

There was no STS-136 mission. Following the STS-132 launch, seen in this video, Atlantis was prepared to fly as a backup in case STS-133 or STS-134, ran into trouble in orbit. STS-134 was the last "planned" shuttle flight of the program, but since Atlantis was prepared to fly, there was special congressional approval to go ahead and fly it as a new "last" mission, with no backup. Thus, Atlantis became the last shuttle to fly on STS-135.

      What happened to STS-136

Why don't the SRB's fall off when the 3 engines are operating . I would imagine these shuttles are pretty powerful. Great editing Jonathon.

      1. Jonathan Mickelson

Each Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) was attached to a strengthened attachment point near the top and bottom of the main tank. Both the Shuttle engines and the SRBs were powerful, but the SRBs were extremely powerful and made up a significant amount of the initial thrust until they were jettisoned. You can see at the 15:00 point of the video that these struts were designed with explosive bolts to separate the top attachment first so the SRBs would fall away from the orbiter stack, rather than towards it.

    52. R2-D2

Well you should put some hard dubstep as the background music

Hi, I didn't originally make this video for KGup, but for myself and my family, following my trip. I used whatever music I wanted, but it was flagged and the music copyholders elected to monetize it. I'm sorry that they did that, becasue I'd love for you to have the uninterrupted experience. I hope to someday put of a version without any music so that you can have that experience!

The launch of spacex seems fake. The era of space shuttle is real.

    69. Nick H

Great Video. I remember watching the Columbia lift off for the first time when I was eight. I was a little too young to remember the moon landings, so the Shuttle was my generations 'space race'! One video I love is "Space Shuttle Launch: Viewed From an Airplane" - it is the best perspective to get true feeling for just how high and fast the shuttle is travelling as it launches, reaches the plane's altitude in seconds and carries on and on. We lose site of her and lack a sense of scale from the ground, but from 35 thousand feet it's just an amazing sight!

      1. Jonathan Mickelson

I agree! That video is awesome and sits high in my list of unique perspectives of a launch. I wish Nasa would have the Fighter Jet patrols video it from their cockpits as well.
