Even though things are getting a bit difficult, The US Navy continues to provide stability and security. If you are interested to find out how you can join the Navy you can visit the website here:
There are tons of interesting career opportunities out there that I never knew about:
The Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks offers incredible opportunities to research Arctic regions. They OWN A ROCKET RANGE. They do things like predict Aurora and monitor seismic and volcanic activity. I wish I knew about this when I was younger.
Check out the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
The US Navy has several options such as engineer, pilot, submariner, logistics, accountant, medical doctor, and even Public Affairs specialist. I continue to be impressed by people that I meed who spent time in the Navy. I worked with various people during the course of filming this video and they were all top notch.
I asked Sofia to write a little blurb about her job experience: Sofia Montalvo is an Ice Analyst at the US National Ice Center (USNIC). She studied meteorology at the University of Miami and atmospheric science at North Carolina State University, but did not know that mapping and forecasting sea ice for safety and navigation was a thing she could do. She loves her job for the mission it upholds: The USNIC Operations Department Analysts use remote sensing and model data to produce hemispheric, regional, and tailored ice and snow analyses. The Operations department is committed to the safety of navigation, protection of life and property, and government scientific research.

Note: The US Navy put no restrictions on me about what I should say or how I should present what I learned on this trip. Other than making sure my footage was cleared for Operational Security, I am free to say whatever I want about this experience. And here is what I want to say: This was an absolutely incredible experience. The Navy personnel and Academic Research Scientists who kept me safe were incredibly professional. Every person I met was exceptional. Also, can I just say that the experience of going underway in a submarine was INCREDIBLE. I'm still trying to decide how I want to release the footage (when I receive the last of it after it's been OPSEC cleared). Right now I'm leaning towards a series of videos similar to a Smarter Every Day Deep Dive on the submarines. The name is certainly fitting! I've also given a lot of thought to recent events here at home and around the world. It occurs to me that the US Navy brings stability and security to the world in a very unique way these days. I'm grateful that I had the opportunity to meet these individuals so I now know how professional these people are. I also want to say thank you to people who support Smarter Every Day on Patreon. My goal is to make intelligent, humble, respectful content. I was given approval for this experience provided I could purchase all the necessary cold weather gear and find a way to get there. Patrons of Smarter Every Day made that happen, so thank you to everyone who partners with me to make this kind of content by supporting at If you're new here, please consider a sub! (lol) Warm Regards, Destin

@Mike Bersuder I'm just not a fan of propaganda when it comes to young audiences

      5. Mike Bersuder

@__ And how does this differ from any other business or job opportunity? The prospective employer will sell the good stuff and gloss over the not so good stuff. Same everywhere.

    2. Turtle Cake

He's doing free propaganda and publicity for the US Navy and he had to pay for his own food in the sub?

The best temperature is -40 at that temperature it is so cold 🥶 that it’s technically impossible to differentiate between Fahrenheit° and Celsius° and like for any temperature « kelvin degrees » are not even a thing...

Does anyone know how the Submarine initially pokes thru the ice? I assume it cant just smash into it hard from underneath, but it sure looks like huge plates of ice have been pushed up and are leaning against the bridge. Also the raised ice all along the body. (maybe thats just snow??) maybe they core holes and drop some TNT in to simply break up an area? or do they completely clear a spot? Very curious how they actually break thru. (btw, great series Destin. Thank you.)

    18. Matthew Collier

Love it when the scientists and stuff clearly get so relieved when they're trying to explain something in a super simple way and Destin realizes what they're talking about and offers the name.

    19. Naduron0

wow! what a lucky guy, i want to inside a submarine also Q.Q, i would only say AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! all the time xD

Yet another great video... In my opinion there is not countries that want to harm US, it is very much is a response to how US have acted - CIA trained terrorists in the day against USSR in mid-east, later it backfired. It simply is action and reaction. In the end US army mostly just protects US interests, being it oil or some other natural resource, it very rarely has anything to do about "freedom and democracy", you never see US going to stabilize a country in despair where there is no natural resources (lots in Africa). The army is just a deterrent that either vengeful of power-hungry dictators, regimes have checks and bounds. Speaking of regimes, I'd prefer colder discussions with a wannabe panda in far east. Has nothing to do with pure defense, my country defended itself when is was being invaded on own soil. FDF. Edit, the Russian bomber intercept happen all the time and since after the cold war height, US fighters have made barrel-rolls around the bombers while they give thumbs up to each other. Just seems many ordinary people in US has lost the perspective. I'm sure this will not get much upvotes, just how I see stuff. Layered clothing is a norm in winter where I am - most important, always have dry clothes, be it water or sweat. Even more important, keep you feet warm and dry. Let's get humanity to rather spend millions on space exploration than ways to end our own kind, in unison.

    21. Ron Adams

It's not that complicated how ice cracks, ice on the poles are always moving also it depends on how cold the last few winters were, how thick and how far from the mainland, also wind plays a part in the cracking, believe it or not seismic activities may also play a role in the ice cracking. I was just joking earlier, it is complicated and one must know what he's doing out on the ice become people lives are in your hands 👍

    64. its AJ

I would love to go there, just even flying to there, looking at the Aurora would be fantastic. definitely one of my dreams. I also like the beanie Destin.

    93. snoot dingo

I served in the Navy in the 90's and saw a couple of Admirals. I NEVER saw an Admiral so young and full of life as Admiral Dollaga!

      1. snoot dingo

When I saw you on the sled it reminded me of when we would go out to this golf course way out in the countryside during blizzards and my dad would pull us around on inner tubes hooked to a snowmobile. He would go very fast and dump us, but the snow was so deep and fresh that it was like jumping into a pool of feathers. I LOVE this series! Thank you SO MUCH for giving us all a rare glimpse into one of the most secretive parts of the US Navy! I've always been interested, as I was asked to be a part of the Navy's Nuclear Program, but decided to be a Seabee instead. It takes special people to be a part of the submariner community, and I hope this shows people just how dedicated our military is in defending us all.

    94. Jonathan Barrett

I am so happy I am going to be able to be working on these amazing machines, I’m proud I joined the navy.
