Well if I wasn’t already radicalised before watching this I would be now. Corporations are the plague of this world
When do we stop having managers?!
When companies claim family status, you know they just wanna fuck you over.
America is worse than China by the looks of it. If you are poor in America, you better go live somewhere else. It really sucks.
I work for a meat processing business. I get paid great and our company has taken very good care of all of us. Not Tyson, but it's a very large company. I don't know how Tyson does their thing, but our company has given us multiple pay raises, provided PPE, testing and started medical leave before the government required it. We've gotten bonuses, they pay for our medical insurance. The whole nine. So, I'm just saying it's unfair to label the entire industry this way.
This may not work for everyone but I suggest buying local. I use getfreerange.info to search and bought a chest freezer
Tuckwit Carlson.
What is a "blank $10,000 check"?
US is the worst first world country
Everything he says is true and it’s not nearly as bad as it really. The meat processing companies have the plant workers backs against the walls as well as the farmers contracted to them. It’s hard to imagine worst working conditions except for a war zone a concentration camp or a Haitian prison.
The amount of respect I have lost for your work after finding out you’re associated with the next for autism event is astronomical. If you can’t do the one google search it takes to listen to autistic voices on this matter, then I dont trust you to properly research your stories. Nothing about us, without us!
Fun fact!: In 2008 or 9, I had cooked a grocery store brand chicken patty and put it on a hamburger bun with ketchup and was eating it for lunch. I bit down on something that was in the chicken patty that wasn't meat. I pulled it out of my mouth and looked at it. It very much in appearance and feel resembled a acrylic fingernail. I immediately lost my appetite and threw away the rest of my sandwich. A week later I threw the rest of bag of chicken patties into the woods behind the house, having not eaten another one and coming to the conclusion that I never would. I've never bought another bag of chicken patties of that brand. After this video, I'm more convinced that I've probably eaten part of someone's finger. We stopped buying anything from Tyson after the story about the managers placing bets.
You forgot Betty White on that list.
5:18 I’m mad they used “oink hub” instead of fucking pork hub or pornhog or some shit
30 years. That man gave up 30 years of his life and they sold him out over being too cheap to follow safety protocol. My chest hurts.
Awww... remember when the US only had 256k dead
Worst part is that on top of all this they have to cut dead birds into pieces hundreds, if not thousands of times per day
it's insane how we have gotten to the point in history where we care more about how the animals in the meat industry than the actual people who work in it... *facepalm*
this reeks of the Koch Bros
As a factory worker I can confirm yeah shits fucked up man, I got second degree burns all over my left hand when I was 22 and they tried to stop me from going to the hospital, kept demanding I admit it was my own fault and that I wouldn’t be able to get workmans comp for it, and then made me go to a doctor hand picked by the factory who they could then had a company liaison sit in on all my appointments taking away any doctor patient confidentiality because they were looking to fire me and hoping I’d fail a drug test or get something else to document on me
Now I am not a expert on food processing logistics and pricing. But for a 1.5$ 5$ a hog 20$ a cow all these employees could be provided with fair and equitable healthcare/ insurance policy. A increase in pay and better working conditions with a little to spare.
In 1906 Upton Sinclair release his book 'The Jungle' which is eerily like this video despite the 114 year gap!
What solutions are there for changing how companies and corporations are fined for worker deaths? I'm sure we start getting into utilitarian territory when we start to think about what the value of a life is, so things can get gray and arbitrary. I have seen in the comments how Finland fines parking violators on a percentage basis as opposed to one of lump sums. Germany implements a ramp-up policy where the fine increases as the number of days an employee can't work increases; the slope here is variable depending on the situation (or something similar to this policy). From looking at it first hand, percentages seem to be the way to go. The more money you make, an hence the more power you accumulate, the harder the fall, more responsibilities there are, and more money you have to cough up. The problem here arises when you look at monopolistic industries where 1 company dominates the landscape, as well as the specific type of industry. What comes to mind are electric utilities. Depending on the scale of the catastrophe, the utility might be fined so hard that in order to stay afloat, they need to lay workers off, cut back which regions/communities have electricity at all, and/or overcharge their customers to make up for the fine. A better system might not be a blanket percentage fine on a company's earning, but possibly something where the percentage is variable between lowest and highest level employees. Think if a company is fined, the majority of the money to pay that fine comes from the CEO, then the next highest comes from CTOs/CFOs/COOs/etc., then business managers, department managers, project leaders, expert employees, intermediate employees, and novice employees. You'd have to figure out how to factor in merit at this point too, since the younger/less experienced worker tends to make the most failures. This solution definitely isn't perfect if I start thinking about merit. Food for though! Take care guys ✌️
Meanwhile the average American citizen minding their own can pay $1500 for a forgotten speeding ticket-- just under half what s corporation racking billions got fined.... I hate this nation and look forward to witnessing the test of its pathetic spital from another country lol.
As a ex meat packer, End of the day the customer wants cheaper meat so we had to work harder and faster luckily I was part of a union
I'm pretty sure the fast food chain I worked at had more OSHA inspections than these meat packing companies
John is a truly compassionate human being.
this is a story about the other animals in the meat farms, the workers :)
a "blank $10,000" check? Huh? That makes no sense, unless he's saying he accepted it and wrote in $10,000? I am confused.
It means it has no condition or anything on it
I wouldn't think I would ever cry for a John Oliver video. This was hard. I'm really sorry for all those people and myself as I'm working in a similar job. I worked during the whole pandemic and still working. I felt ill a couple of times but my covid-19 test request was rejected as my "symptoms were mild". Annual pay rise skipped twice "because of the hard times for the business during the pandemic" meanwhile the business received a huge amount of business support from the government, all the head office colleagues worked from home, 70% of head office and shop managers on furlough since April 2020 and getting their 80% of salaries for zero work, some of them are working for the second job and doubled their income. Pandemic hit some of us in the working class really hard, some of us already dead, rest of us become poorer than ever before.
Are you saying we are eating covid 19 infected chicken? Holy shltch covid-19 spread from human to chicken to us?
Australia has similar issues with sheep and pig factories, probably others that I’m not aware of. It’s not good.

The meat industry is pretty much legal mobsters selling us the crappiest meat possible. No respect for employees nor for the product they sell. And the majority of people don't even give one flying fuck!
My mom had been working in construction as a flagger for over 2 years. Many times it's only with men that do not support her going to a restroom. She has had to wear diapers to keep her job.
Seriously, with everything happening, when is there gonna be a revolution?

I’m a truck driver who does a lot of loads for Tyson, Purdue, Smithfield and JBS. This video only scratched the surface of how gross these places are. There’s a reason I get most of my meat from a local butcher.
The more I watch this show, the more I'm convinced that this is the worst country in the world
Sometimes it seems as if the USA and China are really not that different
This genuinely made me shed a tear for those people. How could anyone treat a human being like that? It's modern slavery.
How long can USA keep this up?
I've been a halfatarian for a while now, meaningly I deliberately try to make at least half my meals vegetarian. Seeing the human rights situation of these workers is a strong point in favour of further reducing meat consumption.
When a company says "We treat our workers as family" what they mean is "We think you should prioritize us above everything else in your life in exchange for the bare minimum and we don't believe you deserve boundaries"

Ut Ecclesiam tuam secura tibi facias libertate servire, te rogamus, audi nos. It wouldn't work on the Devil himself tho
For reference, a cursory search puts the number of meatpacking employees at 500,000, which means that 57,543 Covid cases figure accounts for about 11.5% of the total workforce.
Here's the thing, if the workers join a Union, and I strongly recommend the IWW, aka the wobblies, they can collectively bargain for their rights purely by unified lightning strikes if their demands aren't met.. So, for a start, why aren't they wearing chainmail gloves on their holding hand? It's standard H&S practice for all butchers in the UK, unless they're at a much higher grade.. Facemasks on the production line, more spacing, etc, etc.. All far quicker solved by a Union explaining the benefits of happier, safer and therefore more productive staff..

That 0.0003% claim doesn't seem to be true and seems to be based either on confusing income with profit or they forgot to multiply by 100 to get the percentage. JBS's profit in 2020 was about 4.6 billion Brazillial real, which is about $830 million. $15000 is 0.002% of $826 million. Still utter peanuts, but about a hundred times more peanuts than the program claims.

This turns me off to eating meat even more than the act of slaughter itself.

In Australia OHS issues are raised at a monthly meeting with management representatives and are minuted. Ohs representatives conduct hazard identification and risk assessments. If an OHS representative deems a machine or work practice unsafe they have the power to issue the company with a PIN notice (provisional improvement notice) which gives the company 2 weeks to rectify the problem or that machine or work practice is shut down. If an OHS rep deems a work practice or machine poses an immediate risk they can shut it down immediately. In both of those instances the OHS representative is required to inform the governing body (WorkSafe) immediately. As for the practice of preventing employees using the toilet, an employer would have WorkSafe all over them if they even tried that. America needs to toughen up their Labor laws.
Put a box on your head??? How could you seriously ask someone that.
I love John Oliver, but why did he not read out loud that Asian workers are also being exploited in this industry? When it is clearly written in the article excerpt displayed next to his head about which minority groups are affected by this?

I used to work investigating compensation claims for the Australian Government. Under the legislation I was administering a worker cannot waive their rights to compensation. Even if someone forces them to sign a waiver it is not legally binding. But of course this is America where everything is f--d up, so anything goes, I guess

This is not just this industry, it's a Western management style that seems prevalent across most industries. Just that every now and then, management at one company or industry do something bad enough to get picked up and run by the press.
