$15,000 Wood Slab Kitchen Island - One-Man Woodworking Shop

This wood slab kitchen island was one of my biggest woodworking projects to date. It was also my first kitchen island/woo countertop project! Made from a single piece of locally salvaged Black Walnut and the voids filled with jet black epoxy resin. This slab started out at nine feet long and over five feet wide. Rough cut by me and the final shape was precision cut by a CNC. I even decided to deliver this one personally and help with the installation. Let me know if you have any questions about the build!

Genius! Way out of my league, though. This is like when you see a beautiful girl on the street, adorable, a figure to die for and you ask yourself, what are my chances? None, obviously. Same here. You have to be an artist to turn this level of craftsmanship out. Hey, I can do a wooden box! Seriously, this is a great video. I like the calm demeanor of the narrator (creator)

      1. Eric Black

        You should be working 4 NASA! 😂 😂 😂 😂

      2. Anne Hoffman

Not wood but it was so beautiful! Great job! I would totally have a dining room table from a slab though!

      3. Fallen Engel

What are your chances!? You have yourself NO CHANCE. gotta play, to win. You don't know, what other people like, so don't deny yourself! There's a reason women dress like that, you might very well be the only one to compliment her, so don't count yourself out before even trying.

      4. Free Ma

@Josh Schneider maybe they had the wrong 'doctor' and got injected with who knows what!? it's people in jail for that right now...but I digress.

    4. Justicescales123

      No question but, wood!

    5. greenmojo2

Absolutely could not do wood countertop. This is probably blasphemy on a wood working channel, but I don't even like wood! But there is something incredibly cool about the building process, and this video is a prefect example of what a KGup channel should be. Perfectly paced and timestamped, presented by a knowledgeable professional in a calm, informative manner. No artifical hype, no annoying as fuck youtube "personality", no bullshit. Hell, I don't even like Woodworking to be straight with you all. However, I was fascinated by this entire video. Great job!!!

    6. Aku Tamar

      To much talk

    7. Kevin C

Wood First time viewer, and all I can say is wow. My dad is a carpenter and I took shop class all through high school, so I understand the time and effort that went into this countertop and you did an outstanding job. Hat’s off to you.

    8. Dippy Del Norte

Wood! I do like looking through the comments and seeing all the people who didn’t watch until the end haha. That said, that was a gorgeous piece of wood and the work you did was absolutely beautiful. I didn’t really care for the design choices that the buyer made and the overall shape of the counter, but you did an amazing job.

    9. michelle grenier

It was lovely and if you every do a blue epoxy on quartz or something not so dark I would love to see it

      1. michelle grenier

        Also no wood lol

    10. Tyler Judd

don’t normally comment on videos but this is my first time seeing your channel and i’m glad I stayed till the end that countertop is absolutely stunning

    11. BaenGeiwn

Looks awesome but I probably wood not.

    12. Joe Blackmore

wood because i wanna try it my self

    13. Chip Cook

That is beautiful. And music is often just fluff -- unless someone is talking over it.

    14. Roberto Jomenez

    15. ami malimovka

Gorgeous work! loved the commentary:-) and definitely would :-)

    16. sahlool

not wood. lmao you crazy ily

    17. one2tumble

Wood love to have would counter tops.

    18. Gareth

Would not. Currently have engineered stone, it’s fine, I just want something easy to clean and live with. This video came up in my recommendations, really interesting & engaging.

    19. Nate

wood In a few years when the kids are out of the house at least... Great video. Did you get pro-level training for this or did you use the tried and true mistake school! Thank You

    20. George Rizza

Beautiful - my concern with wood is more about cupping. I would hate to invest that much money only to see it distort or cup due to changes in moisture. Is there anything you do to prevent this?

    21. Nabil Samah

      Bravo.good job

    22. lawrence bell

Good content I like the wood

    23. Leon Joel

      I would have wood

    26. Tim Goppelsroeder

How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

    27. spamanator666

Wood not... I have wood butcher block counter tops now and I hate them. Always staining and I have to be extra careful not to burn them...

    28. Jason Miller

Wood! Dude that was absolutely amazing! Love walnut! What a beautiful piece!!!!! Thanks for sharing!

    29. Valter Patrickson

    30. Michael Inglis

Wood d ; under the right conditions.

    31. Ric [OB] Blanchard

      Wood have.

    32. Terrence Kepa

      🇳🇿👍wood have woody countertops 👌🇺🇸O 4 Orsome bench top☝️

    33. Franky Broadcast

That looks amazing. I would like a woodtop island, but not too use it as a usable countertop for cutting and cooking, but just for eating and socializing. That top came out great.

    34. Nick Willburn

Wouldn't. I'm also ruff on things, great video. Beautified work, good commentary. You thought about a background song or melody to just play at 5% or something while you talk?

      1. Blacktail Studio

I did in earlier videos. People seem to prefer this though now

    35. ddk ddk

      Базар жоқ👍

    36. Kurikat

    37. Chozen1278 Gaming

    40. Ridhwaan Pietersen

I would love to have wood counter tops.

    41. Ridhwaan Pietersen

I really appreciate your honesty, good work.

    42. Yu Jaliria

Awesome finished good but end up in the kitchen bit wasted specialty for that kind slab size...

    43. Kenler Blanco Jiménez

For as much as I would love wood, I know durabillity kills the looks for me. This was in fact a great video. Loved the natural feeling and the realism of the narrative as well as the awesome craftsmanship. Keep it up man!! Appreciate you. Btw new sub and liked of course.

    44. drumboarder1

For anyone who just discovered the mute button, I recommend some meshuggah as background music

    45. Mr Heckles

For me it all kind of gets lost when you're talking about what happened, this and that... On the video you're showing the processes of what you've done, some texts on screen with comments about it, but then you start talking about something else completely unrelated with what is on screen, so we have to pick what we're going to pay attention on.

    46. drumboarder1

Wood or not wood. "content creator" is wanky but you're a woodworker, people are watching for your skills and knowledge as well as your video skills. Carpentry video maker? Being specific seems more substantial than just KGupr or content creator

      1. Blacktail Studio

        Online educator 🤷🏻‍♂️

    47. Kasper Rubin

That's amazing! I've just recently bought custom oak tables for my apartment and the process was much like yours. I got to visit the guy's storage and looking at various raw planks to determine what I wanted. A week later he got a plank that fit my needs and before shipping he showed me the result. Such great service!

      1. Blacktail Studio

        Love that kasper!

    48. Rod Schmidt

Not wood, I think. Beautiful job though!

    49. 4ygeca

10:00 damn... it's work👍but why you don't tell it from beginning? just mute it... so simple and so beautiful decision

    50. The Jovial Brit

Wood. It just makes that more personal connection to Earth and her history. It's almost an appreciation of it. I've been an artist and musician for most of my life so I kinda get how it ca be a heart stopper when somebody says something like that lol.

    51. Bierra Michele

    52. Martin Hooper

    53. Chris Porter

    54. Lassi Niitlahti

      Would have one for sure

    55. Zac Young

I would have wood. Just make sure there s always a board handy for something to go on!

    56. Ivan Smiljkovic

10:00 I like that attitude. You got my like on this video right after that. Respect.

    57. watcher63034

I would go with a wood countertop. You cant appreciate it if it is hidden. Let it get chipped, scratched, or whatever may happen and dont freak out if it does happen. Enjoy it and share its beauty with others! Love the look of it and wish more people would use hand planes to really pop the figure, but not possible with epoxy inlay in my opinion.

    58. M M

Gonna be hard to keep hot pots off of that counter. Strange material to be so close to a stove.

    59. Cody

    60. Dong Stone

    61. Alex

Would not wood, but I definitely wouldn’t mind $15k for doing a cool piece like that :)

    62. Destroyanad

This video is amazing, entertaining the entire way through and i knew exactly what was going on and i have 0 woodworking experience.

    63. Peter Swarts

🪵...Nothing wrong with the commentary my guy. For what it’s worth, the works continues as you narrate, making for an interesting and satisfying experience. The video is 18:30 long and that’s all the content. In other people’s videos, the video is 30:00 long, but the actual content is just 10:00, coz they yap on and on for 3/4 of the video. Anyway, nice job

    64. Aarya Bhardwaj

Binging with babish but you work on wood instead of food

    65. Jai-Vision

Wow simply amazing 🤩 very informative and blunt but also nice and smooth n straight to the point! Great job my guy

    66. Kyle Bamping

Wood. But I'd have to train the family on how to respect it. Finished product looks gorgeous. First time watching your videos so was considering subscribing throughout the video until you told the commentary haters to get rekt. I appreciate your lighthearted and informative approach. Keep doing you dude

    67. Robot831

Nonono I like your voice, it's like a voicemail over it's relaxing and interesting I like everything and part in this video :)

    68. MCHogan

    69. Dean Iversen

um $15k for a countertop.. *chuckles*

      1. Blacktail Studio

        That’s correct chuckles.. Cam

    70. Riaan van Rooyen

I am a kitchen designer from South Africa and must say thanks for all the awesome uploads. Wish we had someone like yóu here, as I love designing "out of the box" ideas and your tops would work perfectly. Great job man. Greetings

      1. Blacktail Studio

I’d love to do that over there too!

    71. Tim Crawford

It’s fabulous and stunning, but I’m like you, Mr. Murphy rides on my shoulder and will impose his wrongness at the most unfortunate time. The wood counter is Mr. Murphy bait! Well done!

    72. Dean Iversen

why do you not put a vacuum sealer on your 5 gallon bucket to suck all the air bubbles out of it?

    73. Patricia Bajcer

From the standpoint of beauty. . I would the wood. . . From the standpoint of everything else That a countertop must do and stand up to. . . I would NOT wood. . . But it fit so beautifully into your client’s home.

    74. Harley Sullivan

    75. Glen Eaton

WOOD...however, I've never seen Missouri walnut that big...lol. A burl table would be awesome. I like how up front you are, which shows integrity and trustworthiness...awesome job!

    76. Mike

Am curious as to why not just CNC the cutout for the brackets and also why not just use epoxy for the finish. Good job my man.

      1. Blacktail Studio

Should have CNC’d the channels. Didn’t have them yet though. And epoxy finishes are pretty ugly.

    77. Reelax Outdoors

11:46...Straight of Gibraltar viewed from the ISS lol

    78. Krispin scanlon-hill

Wood, I have a cherry countertop finished in walnut oil. It's not really any more work and looks amazing. 100% DIY.

    79. B D

Would not, but that island is gorgeous! I appreciated your commentary, but I think I enjoyed the mute instructions even more. Savage.

    80. BIG MIKE

      great customer service.....wood

    81. Thomas Middleton

      I would have wooden countertops

    82. Hope

      Wood and I loved it!!!!

      1. Blacktail Studio

        Thanks hope!

    83. Brooklyn Giraffe

Not wood. But for a countertop like the one you made, I’d do wood!

    84. Edgargenius

Wood is beautiful but like you said we are animals and me and the old lady probably mess it up..

    85. Wake Miami Great Again

Would do wood!!! Not sure if my wife wood.

    86. Parker Chiudioni

    87. Ed Gilbert

Absolutely beautiful! Not practical in most cases but it s it re is a gorgeous piece of wood!

    88. JamesSwagger101

ok i am not any level when it comes to woodwork but what the hell are the bow ties for haha? PS: Wood, but its iffy like ya said "I know me" lol

    89. cat lady

I visited a wildlife safari in Rosedale California that has amazing furniture made all from slabs of wood.

    90. MegaDgo123

I wood have wood countertops, just make sure it doesn't have wooder on it for too long

    91. Darrell Curr

We love wood countertops and hopefully someday I can make my own style!

    92. Chris Faircloth

hundred percent wood countertop that is beautiful thank you

    93. Keith Olson

Wood countertops are just fine! If I ever build my own house, I'll probably do butcherblock countertops in the kitchen, designed so I can remove and plane them as needed.

    94. Malachi Eclipse

Not wood, I’m also an animal. I personally like the commentary, it’s nice to learn the process.

    95. Kathy Walker

      Not wood! Quartz

    96. goofey goober

If I had a wooden countertop like that as part of a stove, I would have a wooden countertop, but I would probably include some black inlays that are heat resistant for cooking and such. I don’t know anything about wood working or if that would be possible, but that’s what I would do.

    97. 2gears 1grind

      Wood, that countertop is beautiful.

    98. Jonathan Tracy

Would like to thank you for talking and not playing music. Loved that tip for those annoyed by you talking. lol. Subscribed.

    99. Definitely_ Not_a_Ravenclaw

Wood. This is really cool dude

    100. dyscea

I felt challenged. Not wood. For your same reasons. But it’s really great to see it as an option. Thx for the vid!
