    Exploring the engineering principles behind the recent obstruction of the Suez Canal, which caused a weeklong disruption in global shipping traffic. I give a brief overview of the bank effect and dilatancy of coarse-grained soils. Hopefully, the video helps you understand a few of the engineering challenges associated with navigating massive ships through tiny canals and what can happen when they run aground!
    - I incorrectly described the landform as the "Suez Peninsula." It is the "Suez Isthmus."

        I don't think it 's true that the squatting effect applies when passing under the Great Belt Bridge. I have heard this story before and passed under said bridge a couple of times with 19k TEU ships (400x60m). Every captain I've asked about this matter believes that it is not true. This makes sense, seeing as the depth is roughly 60m, which would make the depth under keel more than 40m with draught at 17m. If you have any sources to the story, I'd love to read them! Great content. Having passed through Suez just a couple of days after it was freed, and being a marine engineer, this was a very interesting video.

      Any one on board ships know that without power being lost, steering control electronics failure can give little time in a narrow space.

      Same effect in aircraft wings. Lift is not mainly created below wings but on top of wing by greater wind speed compared to below wing. It's not intuitive and thats why flat wing needs large attack angle to create difference between top and bottom of wing

      I'm in the camp of big gust of wind pushed the ship to leeward and there was not enough room to swing the stern to push it back into the center. As they tried the bank effect took more toll on the volume of water on the leeward side. All the bow thrusters in the world were not going to keep it off the bank ... Imagine the forces on the Ever Given of just 20 kts of wind and all that sail area ...

      I'm a Navigation Officer I have taken ships through the canal. My opinion is that without a mechanical failure, it was most likely a large gust of wind. Windage can effect the ship just as much or more than bank and squat effect. One minute of strong enough wind would be more than enough to change the ships rate of turn, enough to hit the side of the canal.

        @Mike G Well, it's a question of probabilities. And by the way it wasn't just a "wind gust," but a major sand storm with speeds up to about 40 knots (46 mph). These happen only about once a year. And they have the greatest effect on the largest ships, and ships of the Ever Given size are at the moment only about 1 in 100 traversing the Suez Canal, and they don't necessarily traverse when there is a sand storm of that magnitude... There has been talk about whether or not to ban such ships from using the canal. Another option would be to stop all ship movement during sand storms, but because of lost revenue, it's doubtful they'd do that.

        I am not a navigation officer, but I do have a knowledge of engineering and navigation, and I agree that the most likely cause of the accident was the wind. And more specifically, in all likelihood they would have tried to steer slightly into the wind in order to prevent the wind from pushing the ship towards the left bank (the wind coming from the east). So they would have tried to steer a few degrees east of the center-line of the canal. However, the exact number of degrees for this correction depends on the speed of the wind at any given time, and what seems to have happened was that the wind dropped somewhat when the accident occurred, and neither the captain nor the pilot noticed this, and they failed to correct the direction of the ship, with the result that the ship started approaching the right bank, and ended up digging in. After which, the inertia of the ship pushed the stern towards the left bank. So from the engineering and navigational points of view it's not really difficult to understand what happened.

        When we do use tugs usually we attach one forward and one aft.

        @evviper24 yes, some ships have a tug escort but not often. First tugs cost a lot of money to hire. Then the way the canal works is with convoys of ships, if each convoy (South and North) had 10 ships and each ship had two tug boats the convoys now total 60 vessels and would be too long to pass each other using the two lane system in the middle. Also the only way the convoy moves together is by speed matching, at about 8 knots. If you try to speed match a convoy of 30 vessels it wouldn't work, unless the tug boat mooring lines were very slack, in which case there might not be any point in attaching them. Also tug operations are usually very slow, less than 4 knots. At 8 knots it would be difficult for a tug boat to make any difference to the bow of the Ever Given because of the weight of the ship and the inertia of it moving forward.

Billion dollars was damage as 400 ships waiting for a week.. no need engineering details to be used for racist against nations...
