Thumbs up if you got an ad for some kind of always listening device before the video. Thank you for taking time to watch. When I read the paper I knew I had to make a video about this. I hope you enjoy it. If you feel like this has earned your support, the Patreon link is here and I'd be grateful. www.patreon.com/smartereveryday

    15. Dreamcyfer

Well...let me tell you how I think it works...Lazers are a form of plasma, so it is both particle AND wave...it's physical, so it can move the microphone enough to make it work...much like lazer listening on glass but backward...

    16. Manuel Cornejo

Yes, well done but maybe this is not the only vulnerability. What about another kind of interactions like interaction with inaudible ultrasonic commands or using a certain radio frequency of scalar waves?

    17. Cole McCorkell

No wonder why the Siri comes on randomly

    26. Soulife

This probably works in the same way a lightsail works in space. The photons push it, similar to how on earth the sun pushes your skin with the force of a feather. These mics are really sensitive, this demos that.

    27. Soulife

This video triggered a Google easter egg on my Android! I didn't get to read the whole message but it started by saying "I'm flattered you mistook me for Siri". But the video won't trigger it again and when I say it, it just sets the reminder without the flattered part

    39. Mal te

My problem with smarthomes is that I don't want to talk to my house everytime I want to do something... A lightswitch is way more comfortable then a voice command... the same goes for surching stuff. I don't want to say ok google every time. It's easier to just tipe in what i want. at least that is my opinion.

    40. David Collins

      Well mine didn’t work

    41. Eoin sheehan

Destin I’m just gonna say is that you would need to get in the house to tape the google homes mics and camera

This is beyond modern comprehension of physics, if light and sound are both wave functions that can be translated from one to another, what does this mean about future communication?

    54. Christopher Conkright

If light is a wave sound is a wave that is not it? On a microscopic level the waves could be the same? So the very small microphone sees light waves as sound waves. Does this work on large microphones?

    55. Παναγιώτης Τσούσης

      0:12 You overestimate my microphone

    56. JAW Media

Well all of these devices are connected to the internet. That makes them all very vulnerable.

    57. ARndmGmr

Hahaha Google couldn't recognise ur voice in the intro, get dunked

    58. Stanley Coutant

Is the laser wave being modulated with a voice the same way as an amplitude-modulated radio carrier? Was there any analog-to-digital conversion (and therefore some D to A conversion) taking place at any time?

    59. Adrien Pinard

*inntechnoid* on *IG* is actually the best he gained me access to my woman's phone without her notice now I can see all her activities through my phone...

    67. Luke Arts

It looks to be just amplitude modulation on the laser beam. With such small devices, that makes sense that it would work, because of the scale of the membrane approaching the order of magnitude of the wavelength of the carrier. Photoelectric my blub. It's just normal demodulation by passive circuit (just the membrane) because of high energy (laser, hmm?) and because of the wavelength being in the same ballpark as the size of that membrane. A much better known example of this, are singing toasters and singing garage doors (yes, the actual door panes, not the electronic openers, just old fashioned unpowered garage door panes) in the vicinity of long range AM antennas. A much observed creepy issue in the 70s and 80s because of the massive increase in metal in our homes, effectively increasing the chances that one circuit will react as a tuned circuit. The effect requires metal to work, because any metal frame or structure, given the right ratio with the signal, will act like an LC circuit (inductive and capacitive effects) or an RC circuit (resistive and capacitive effects) which demodulate AM, because that's what AM does. IT IS a big thing to bring under the attention of people, showing the vulnerabilities and the absolute necessity to keep a human decision in between at all times. Not to scare you, but I wouldn't be surprised if this mechanism worked with the right microwave equipment, straight through walls and purses, outside of line of sight.

The ability to remotely open your door could be life-saving. If you had an accident at home, let's say you fell onto the ground and can't get up, emergency services can't get in because the door is locked! You could tell google to do it, which would allow emergency responders to get in and potentially save your life.
