I think one of America's biggest problems is its concept of time. America has only been America for 240 years (going off the end date of the revolution). That, for a European, is a comically short amount of time historically, yet the constitution and institutions of America are discussed in a way that's immovable because they've been around 'forever'. Like the consitution sets things in stone because it's so 'ancient'. Seriously USA, there isn't shame in recognising that people who founded a country using systems borrowed from ancient Greece, may have got some stuff wrong. That it doesn't work as well in a modern world post industrial revolution, civil rights movement and suffrage. Remembering how short a time period 240 years is might just help when considering conversations about race and discrimination just saying... Reparations doesn't seem that outlandish when you consider that jim crow laws and banks not lending to black people is in living memory

He should have gone back further to at least Ted Kennedy and his campaign to make sure Bork did not get appointed. And, yes, it was Obama not understanding restraint and being too smug that gave us Trump.

"A republican gouvernment without popular support". Sorry John, but just because you want it to be so doesn't mean it is. Republicans do have a very large POPULAR support base! You know, all those people that Dear Hilary shoved aside and smeared as "deplorables". You need to have some honesty about this, and recognised that the popular vote is not the DEMOCRAT PARTY'S sole property : it goes something along 60/40 at best in republican's favor, because statistics remind us that a vast majority of this country's demographic is mostly white people, like over 60% + to be correct. There has obviously been a demographic shift because of natality rates and immigration over the past decades. But "democratic" ideals are not dominant in the US. Not even in said black/latino communities where many individuals prefer the republican vote over the democrat vote. And all the arguments you provided in this show can just as easily be made against the democrats, especially in the 2020 election, where the electoral collage ruled in favor of the democrat candidate, despite serious concerns of voter fraud from DEMS, and greater numbers in favour of trump than in 2016.

    11. Carl Louis Galli

There is no real democracy is having an electoral college

Please Do A Piece on Michael Jackson Hi, I’m writing to you because Last Week Tonight as opposed to other such shows actually cares about issues rather than chasing the headlines. It has been 11 years since Michael Jackson passed away yet to this day what the common consensus is that he is a taboo subject for many. I recall you guys once did a piece on Public Shaming. Michael Jackson was a genius, an abused child. He was strange. He was one of the few major stars from the 80s who came out of the 80s without a heroine addiction. He in his own way did many, Many strange things, but so do most other superstars. And more than others he actually cared. About children, about the earth. About the issues we are discussing to this day. While Icons like Freddy Mercury, Elvis Pressley, Prince, Beetles and many more are known for their good works, Michael is known for the something which he has repeatedly been acquitted for. It’s the truth that anyone looking for will find instantly but due to the “where there is smoke there is a fire” narrative, even 11 years after his death, the new media treats him like a criminal. All his trial pages are open for the public to read. He WAS weird. Making a ranch called neverland, hanging out with children. Trusting people he shouldn’t. But I urge you please cover him, hear beyond the noise like you guys often do. The most successful African American Artist of all time was a humble man child, who respected women, loved children and cared about our environment. He was not a heroine junkie, a private man who did not share his disease even all the way back in 1993 even though he was accused of wanting to become a “White Man”. He was eccentric. Hanging out with animals and caring about them. theobjectivestandard.com/2020/02/justice-for-michael-jackson/ This article covers multiple sources, some of which I had read previously. Michael Jackson was a multi talented millionaire pop star, who was not an alcoholic, was a caring father, a filial son, Treated women with respect, cared about the planet and it’s beings. The press that constantly kept DASHING him, had found a way to subvert their guilt. All those years of calling him a “Jacko”, “monkey” and many more hurtful things was justified if he was a paedophile. They NEEDED him to be guilty. Such a man cannot exist in Hollywood. Such public shaming had allowed and to this day allows Michael to be a victim to all this slander. Please do a piece, if not one that exonerates him then one that once and for all cements the fact the Michael Jackson, the greatest pop star, the first African American Idol was a paedophile. Not through unknown sources or flimsy headlines but through concrete proof. A news echoing in a closed chamber will not reach anyone, most fans who what to know the truth know it, other people will read the headlines but not the explanations. It’s about time the general public knows. Please do a piece on Michael, the blatant mistreatment by the media, The systematic racism he faced during his trials. Please don’t let the first African American Singer be remembered for the things he did not do, He was weird, weird enough to annoy Freddy Mercury with Bubbles feedbacks, weird enough to let kids crack raw eggs over Michael Jackson, Weird enough to play water balloons with children. But he was not a paedophile and the world needs to acknowledge that. He was in no way a “Perfect Human” but he tried his best to live right and we should not punish him for doing that. On this year please exonerate this Black man, the Justice System has done it two decades ago, it’s about time everyone else does. Please do a piece on Michael Jackson. #spreadtheawareness #justiceformichael #hedeservedbetter

Just for anyone who thinks ACB might sway the votes on abortion. Twice in the past couple presidents, the main Republican SCJ actually sided WITH Roe v Wade. Christians voting R simply for abortion actually have no clue that their vote has done nothing. Twice an abortion case has reached the SC and twice the Republican in that group has not tried to overturn it.

Way to insert a random misogynistic, woman-hating joke into an irrelevant segment, John Oliver. Promoting erasing a woman from her amazing work is disgusting. I am very disappointed in you for spreading misinformation and hatred against J.K. Rowling, and women in general. Shame on you.

      1. Thepanpiper

Would you care to explain how simply noting a lot of people have stated their intent of taking a "death of the author" view of Harry Potter in the future is somehow misogynistic? Or misinformation or hatred for that matter?

    46. John Danielson

Who else is watching this after Democrats took back the Senate in the hopes that Joe Biden will change the judiciary?

      1. Christine Benson

I honestly hope that Thomas and Alito retire or in the case of Thomas get impeached. Although, it may not be that realistic to suggest impeachment for actions that one's spouse did. I'm referring to the fact that the FBI is investigating how involved Mrs. Thomas was in planning the riot/capital seige. Apparently, she was actively supporting it. I believe that if she did have a hand in planning it, Thomas should be impeached since it looks very bad the the spouse of a Supreme Court Justice would try to overthrow the government.

I’m Scottish so of course my mind went to “why don’t you just have a referendum on the electoral college” Makes sense and it’s hopefully to much of a political hit to block it.

      1. Andrew

@Quirky Black Enby fair about trying to overturn results and about people forgetting, but a referendum can be done with lots of people. India have a far more complex democratic system with over a billion people. (The reason I mentioned I’m Scottish was a joke, we want a referendum)

      2. Quirky Black Enby

We have too many people to do that and that wouldn't give everyone an equal chance to express what they want due to our sketchy voting history. That's not a simple solution and politicians would definitely try to block it. They literally tried to claim the presidential election was rigged and overturn the results. Most politicians aren't afraid of being voted out because they think people will forget all the fucked up stuff they did by the time their reelection rolls around so it's not a political hit to them. I mean look at Ted Cruz.

I like America but this religious compulsion in America is really disgusting . Reminds me in islamic country . Do judges also have to pray and ask god for permission before they pass judgment ? Must the accused pray beforehand ? It's so ridiculous and very unfree. I am so glad that there are many other countries in the world without religious dogmatism .

    69. David

John's implication that the United States isn't naturally center-right, is true. However, just because it isn't naturally center-right doesn't mean that the current state of the political discourse in the country isn't center-right. A Gallup study taken in 2019 proved this. news.gallup.com/poll/275792/remained-center-right-ideologically-2019.aspx - mediabiasfactcheck.com/gallup/ -- This doesn't mean that the United States won't be majority center-left in the future, or wont have a 1/3 split in some way (One year after this poll was taken, that might be the case.). But the current state of the political divide doesn't match with what he is trying to portray.

      1. Christine Benson

In actuality the "liberal" views are more popular than the "conservative" views in not only America, but Western Europe as well. I'll use some controversial points: Abortion rights Same sex marriage Freedom of religion Now, what the "conservative" people get incorrect on them. Abortion rights is not only about body autonomy, but simply put forcing your beliefs on others. I'm pro-choice not because I want to have an abortion, but I want all women to have access to safe and healthy ones. Women should also have access to affordable birth control. The Supreme Court just ruled that the current administration can restrict women's access to early abortion medication, which had been proven safest method during the pandemic. I've always wondered as well why a man should have a say whether a woman has an abortion, yet woman get no say if a man has a vasectomy. Same sex marriage shouldn't be up for debate anymore. It has no bearing on the "sanctity" of heterosexual marriage. It's just another way for them to dictate our lives by saying to adults whom love each other can't be legally married. Freedom of religion is a sticky one in my opinion. So many evangelicals get this so wrong. Freedom of religion means the government allows you to practice your chosen religion as long as it doesn't harm others. It doesn't mean churchs can disregard rules in order to protect others health in the middle of a pandemic. It also means that if I'm a Lutheran I can't try to force my beliefs on a person that is Jewish or Catholic. Just like Evengelicals aren't supposed to force their views on us. It's meant to respect all religions, but so many think it's only to protect "Christians", which is ridiculous. Fun fact: my Lutheran church is considered the "liberal" church in town, despite us having a United Church of Christ church as well. I think it's a safe assumption that half of our churchs are conservative, homophobic and pro-life. I find it interesting since Jesus was a hippy who hung out with the lepers, poor and the prostitutes.

get rid of the racist Electoral College system, & then the popular vote system, & there will never be a Republican President again!!!! A democracy lol, when the winner loses, almost every time in recent Elections. when it takes 7 million votes for 1 U.S, Senator from California, that's democracy for you. maybe the States that put the most money into the Federal Gov., should have extra Reps, & Senators, & the Annual CADGERS whom receive Federal, Funds should get less. .Firstly make Puerto Rico & Washington DC , official STATES, then you have 4 more Dem.in the senate, then pack the court, with Justices, whom make judgements, that represents the MAJORITY of the citizens.,,,so this chant, of greatest democracy ever is absolute, codswallop... stay safe A Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays from Scotland

Abolishing electoral college only looks good at the first glance. If you are not a brit who moved from London to New York, however, abolishing the electoral college will disenfranchize basically every American who doesn't live in a big city. They will become irrelevant. Politicians and presidential candidates will only campaign in big cities if all they need is a simple majority popular vote. The electoral college makes rural areas a valuable and necessary participants in the electoral process. Which you, my dear british chap, didn't even mention as a possible fallout of your rant. What we DO need is change the way the electoral college is formed. Right now it's formed by the formula "number of congressmen + the number of senators". Which is, OF COURSE, unfair. Electoral college should be based on the population of each state. Which you, my dear chap, didn't even mention as a possible solution.

    88. Maloy7800

YOU ARE FORTY THREE!?!?!?! Dude, you do NOT age well!

    89. Sabin

You want to fix the way presidents are elected? You can do that easily by repealing the 17th Amendment. The purpose of the Senate is NOT to be another voice for the People, it's meant to be where delegates from State governments ensure that their state's interests are being preserved. By making the Senate popularly elected, it breaks the system in exactly the way John described, because it was never meant to work that way and the 17th Amendment broke it. The 17th Amendment is racist and should be struck down. Guess what? The Supreme Court already has term limits. That limit is 1 term, which extends until the death, resignation, retirement, or removal of the Justice. But seriously, if you think the solution is to keep expanding the Court and limiting the impact of the Justices appointed to it, then you might as well abolish the Court entirely and just call for a national referendum on every item brought to it. Hopefully, I don't have to spell out how terrible that would be. Both of these institutions exist for one unifying purpose: to prevent both tyranny and mob rule. When 51% of people decide that the other 49% exist to serve them (i.e. they support Medicare-for-All and Free-Education initiatives), democracy becomes just as evil as the other political and social structures from which we, as a nation, exist get away.

as someone with family and friends in Puerto Rico I can tell you there's a huge red population there so voting the wrong way is not the reason they arent a state. Also they're constantly doing polls on whether the people actually want to become a state or not and it's constantly switching back and forth, it's not like they all wanna join the states and America just wont let them because we hate latinos they dont wanna join us
