I like how these test vehicles aren't super slick, they look like just a bunch of scrap bolted together onto rocket engines and I absolutely love it..

More junk into orbit... well done SpaceX!

    1. Wojtek Sykurski

@HammerPT ".. who will exploit cheap labor from underdeveloped countries" dude, please. I have several friends in India. They work now in IT departments. On average they salary is between 1500-2000$. It my looks small: but the alternatives in India were total crap jobs for 200-300$ (per month!). " We are already connected here on earth and starlink is just a waste of resources!" -> can I ask You where are You living? I'm from one of post-soviet countries. And I do know situations in countries like Mongolia, Romania, Tropical Africa regions. 50Kb/s with data cap at 2GB and 40$ price is quite fast offer in those regions. And if You think that this is minority: You have over 4 billions peoples living in such regions.

    2. HammerPT

@Wojtek Sykurski again as you said, this will benefit the rich, the companies ... who will exploit cheap labor from underdeveloped countries! We always come back to the same point ... a maximum of profits and profits for companies already very rich! We can discuss for hours, everyone will keep these positions and opinions on the merits of Spacex and Starlink. One thing is for sure, as much as I am a positive person who believes that the future of humanity is in space, I believe that here on earth we are going straight into the wall! Humanity must dream, it always has, but in an environment we do not understand and with limited resources we must first be realistic. We are already connected here on earth and starlink is just a waste of resources! As for the link on Chinese pollution, it is pure hypocrisy ... China certainly pollutes, but it also pollutes because the Western American and European companies in the lead relocate their production down there for maximum profits! China pollutes, it is a fact, but here is another, the Western countries, USA, Europe, AUSTRALIA and so on, they lie to their citizens by making them believe that they pollute less, whereas in in fact they just de-localize their pollution in poor countries and the next target will be India. We live in a manipulative, hypocritical society cradled by dreams of megalomaniacs totally disconnected from reality. It's a shame!

    3. Wojtek Sykurski

@HammerPT "o earn less than 5 dollars a day can pay a starlink internet subscription?" -> as I have put it before: this is not for individuals. This is for companies. " it is essential to reduce or even stop our way of consuming" -> sorry, but that won't happen. This is simply not about Europe and USA. Russia openly admits that Global Warming is beneficial for them. In fact: this will allow them to access resources in Siberian permafrost. China is somewhere between. They will be affected both positive and negative by global warming. But right now they produce more green houses than the rest of developed world (source: arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2021/05/chinas-carbon-pollution-now-surpasses-all-developed-countries-combined/). Yes, they are promising to limit it by 2030. But this is the same country that denied existence of Covid-19 before it turned out into pandemic....

    4. HammerPT

@Wojtek Sykurski in theory it's very pretty ... in practice it's something else ... i've been to philipines or africa ... you really think that people who earn less than 5 dollars a day can pay a starlink internet subscription? Or even, if its free, will they even be able to buy a pc/tab or mobile phone? Bullshit yes ... our planet is no longer in good shape, it is essential to reduce or even stop our way of consuming ... Starlink will on the contrary increase world consumption! This is not a good thing! it will only serve the rich ... but I'm not surprised by spaceX, after all they are manipulation experts!

    5. Wojtek Sykurski

@HammerPT About collisions: to low orbit for full cascade effect. If it was other way, we would already have it after India and China anti-sat. weapons tests. About obstruction: Yes, sorry for that. SX should add IR/UV/Visible light cams. to they sats and point it upward. Plus free access to data for everyone. On the other side: I have notice increase in astronomy observations, since people can track Starlinks trains. About usability for humanity: Philippines, Africa, South America. Those are regions, where fiber wire internet access in either impossible or prohibitive expensive. As far as Starlink prices will be prohibitive for individuals living there, it will not be so hard for companies. And please notice how much fast internet connection has helped peoples in India, by creating tens of millions of job places. Starlink (and other constellation) can do the same for other developing countries on Earth.

Was there a starlink launch that messed up and ended up leaving a jumbled mess of satellites? Some friends and I were driving through Oregon last night. We saw a line of satellites that reminded me of starlink but they were a jumbled mess. There was probably fifty of them, but they were way too close together and not in a straight line at all.

    1. Budabaii

@Ethan Roberts We all tried taking photos of it when we saw it, but our phones couldn't quite do the job. I've seen them all lined perfectly lined up before, but this was a jumbled mess of spots in the night sky. There was really no order to it at all, it kind of looked like a flock of birds if that makes any sense. we stopped the car and watched as it made its way all the way across the sky. It definitely wasn't a uniform line, but they stayed in perfect unison for the entire duration that we watched. my first thought when looking at it was that something went foul and the satellites were released in some funky way that made them not line up properly.

    2. Ethan Roberts

No Starlink launch has messed up but they do look like a line of dots when they've been recently launched.

  65. Think BeforeYouVote

Love everything about SpaceX EXCEPT this. I honestly can't wait for someone to come along and launch a large dumpster into orbit so that it can collect all this fucking garbage you are shitting out into the night sky.

    1. Wojtek Sykurski

I think that I have responded to You already. Starlink sats are on low orbit: without regular thrusters burns they will fall and burn up in atmosphere. When satellite life span ends (10-15 Years, most likely fuel tanks will also be depleted then) it will simply fall. No space junk here...
